How to Avoid Scams When Buying Digital Products in Pakistan
Nearly every Pakistani who has bought something online has a story: paid on JazzCash, got blocked; received a Drive link that expired; bought a course that turned out to be someone else's, resold. The patterns repeat, which makes them easy to spot once you know them.
The five patterns
Almost every case reported to us is a variation of one of these.
Advance payment to a personal wallet
You send money to a personal JazzCash or Easypaisa number with nothing holding it. Once sent, you have no recourse.
The dead link
A Google Drive link that is revoked after payment, or was never shared with your account.
Resold material
Someone else's course sold as their own - no updates, no support, and it can disappear on a copyright claim.
Preview bait
Screenshots show a rich product; the file you receive is a thin extract.
The fake urgency DM
'Only 2 seats left, pay in 10 minutes.' Real sellers do not need a countdown to take your money.
What escrow changes
On Waqaram your payment is held rather than handed straight to the seller. The seller is paid only after the order completes and the download is confirmed, which means an absent or broken file is refundable rather than gone.
Download links are encrypted and expire, so what you paid for cannot be quietly swapped after the fact, and every order keeps a record both sides can point at in a dispute.
Reading a listing before you pay
Look for specifics: file format and size, page or lesson count, what is included, when it was last updated. Vagueness is the single most reliable warning sign.
Verified seller badge
CNIC-verified identity on file with the marketplace.
Reviews from real orders
Only buyers with a completed order can review.
Stated format and size
'PDF, 82 pages, 14 MB' beats 'complete guide'.
A refund policy that exists
Missing, corrupted or misdescribed files are refundable.
If something goes wrong
Open a dispute from the order page rather than arguing in DMs. The order, the file and the messages are all attached to the case, and the escrow hold means the money is still recoverable at that point.
If you paid a stranger directly on WhatsApp, report it to your wallet provider and to the FIA's cybercrime wing - but understand that recovery is rare. That is precisely the gap escrow closes.
